How Can You Upgrade from an Enrolled Nurse to a Registered Nurse in Australia?

2025 November 2

Upgrading from Enrolled Nurse (EN) to Registered Nurse (RN) is one of the most popular career advancement pathways in Australia’s healthcare sector. RN qualifications offer higher salaries, greater responsibilities, more autonomy, and expanded opportunities in hospitals, aged care, mental health, community care, and advanced nursing practice.

If you're an EN—whether trained in Australia or overseas—this guide explains the exact pathways, entry requirements, duration, costs, and the difference between Australian ENs and international ENs who want to become RNs in Australia.

Why Upgrade from EN to RN in Australia?

1. Higher Earning Potential

Registered Nurses earn significantly more.

  • EN salary: AUD 55,000–70,000
  • RN salary: AUD 75,000–110,000+

2. Career Progression

RNs can specialize in:

  • Emergency
  • Mental health

  • ICU

  • Midwifery

  • Theatre nursing

  • Community health

  • Infection control

  • Child & family health

3. Increased Autonomy

ENs work under RN supervision, while RNs:

  • Assess patients

  • Develop care plans

  • Administer complex medications

  • Make clinical decisions

3. Strong Job Demand

Nursing is on the Skilled Occupation List in Australia, and hospitals increasingly prefer RNs for senior and leadership roles.

EN to RN Pathways in Australia

If you completed the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing in Australia and are registered with AHPRA as an EN, your pathway is straightforward.

Pathway 1: Bachelor of Nursing (Fast-Track or Credit Transfer)

Most universities offer credit exemptions to ENs, reducing the study load by up to 1 year.

Common credit awarded:

  • 6–8 subjects

  • Equivalent to 1 year of study

Duration

  • Standard Bachelor of Nursing: 3 years

  • EN entry with credits: 2–2.5 years

Delivery

  • Full-time, part-time, or blended

  • Clinical placements included

Top Universities Offering EN-to-RN Credit Pathways

  • University of South Australia

  • Deakin University

  • Federation University

  • Western Sydney University

  • Griffith University

  • Charles Darwin University

  • Australian Catholic University (ACU)

  • University of Tasmania

Entry Requirements for Australian ENs

  • AHPRA EN registration

  • Completed Diploma of Nursing (Australia)

  • English proficiency (IELTS 7.0 each band or equivalent — sometimes waived if diploma was done locally)

EN to RN Pathways for Internationally Trained ENs

This is the area many applicants misunderstand.
Overseas EN qualifications are NOT automatically recognized as equivalent to Australian EN qualifications.

This means:
Most overseas ENs cannot enter a second-year Bachelor of Nursing directly.
They usually need to start a full Bachelor of Nursing (3 years) OR complete the AHPRA OBA pathway if eligible.

Option 1: Complete a Bachelor of Nursing in Australia (3 years)

This is the most common, reliable pathway.

Why?

  • Overseas EN qualifications do not meet Australian Diploma of Nursing competency standards

  • Therefore, universities cannot offer credit exemptions

Duration:

3 years full-time

Outcome:

You graduate and become eligible for AHPRA RN registration.

Option 2: AHPRA’s OBA (Outcome-Based Assessment) Pathway

This option is only open to overseas ENs who meet specific AHPRA equivalency requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible if:

  • Your qualification matches Australian EN standards

  • You meet AHPRA’s recency of practice

  • You pass the English test (IELTS 7 each band OR PTE 65 each band)

OBA Steps

  1. AHPRA Self-Check

  2. Submission of documents

  3. NCLEX-RN exam

  4. OSCE clinical exam

  5. AHPRA RN registration

Duration:

6–12 months
Depends on exam preparation time.

Detailed Step-by-Step: How to Upgrade from EN to RN in Australia

Step 1: Check Your Current Qualification

  • Are you an EN trained in Australia? → You qualify for EN-to-RN credit transfer.

  • Are you an EN trained overseas? → You will need OBA or full BN.

Step 2: Choose Your Pathway

  1. Australian EN → Bachelor of Nursing with credits

  2. Overseas EN → Bachelor of Nursing (3 years)

  3. Overseas EN → OBA pathway (if eligible)

Step 3: Prepare Documents

  • Academic transcripts

  • Work experience letters

  • AHPRA registration (if applicable)

  • English test results

  • Passport

Step 4: Apply to a University or Begin AHPRA Process

University intakes:

  • February

  • July

  • October/November (selected institutions)

Step 5: Complete Clinical Placements

All RN programs require 800–1000+ hours of practice in:

  • Hospitals

  • Aged care

  • Community

  • Mental health

  • Primary health

Step 6: Obtain AHPRA RN Registration

Once you finish your studies or pass OBA, AHPRA issues your Registered Nurse license.
